Family name research is not hte same as family tree research, which is based on one family's memento from the past.
Family names can be classified into four groups by their origin.
- geographical origin
- family relation
- familiar name or nickname
- occupational origin
Most of the surnames have coat-of-arms. But it doesn't mean that they were enobled because it can be deserved only by one great deed by the wearer.
The coat-of-arms themselves became important by the spreading Christanity, when the armour hid its wearer. It was important that the badge of the leader, banderole, shield and later the crest would be well identifable during the fight and they could collect the scattered soldiers after the the fight. It's function was to differentiate not to decorate.
Later during the Middle Ages these characteristic symbols shaped a special language. To understand them, besides local traditions, we must focus on general rules. Heraldry is related to the duties of the heralds who presented the wearer of the coat-of-arms compact by to an mostly illiterate audience.
